Embracing the Gift of Joy

The third week of Advent invites us to pause and reflect on a powerful and transformative theme: joy. It’s a week marked by celebration, as we light the pink candle on the Advent wreath, also known as the “Shepherd’s Candle.” This symbol reminds us of the joyful proclamation delivered to the shepherds on the night of Jesus’ birth:

"I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord." (Luke 2:10-11)

Joy Amid Uncertainty

The shepherds were unlikely recipients of such momentous news. They were ordinary people, going about their daily routines, likely enduring challenges and hardships. Yet, God chose to deliver the message of joy to them, reminding us that joy is not reserved for the privileged or the perfect moments in life. It is a gift available to all, no matter the circumstances.

For many of us, this season can feel overshadowed by stress, grief, or unmet expectations. The story of the shepherds shows us that joy isn’t dependent on external circumstances—it springs from the good news of Jesus. When we focus on the hope He brings, joy becomes a deep, abiding reality rather than a fleeting emotion.

Joy as a Choice

The joy of Advent isn’t passive; it’s an invitation to actively rejoice in the truth of God’s love. Paul writes in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” This isn’t a call to deny our struggles or force superficial happiness. Instead, it’s a reminder to center our hearts on the unchanging truth of Christ's presence in our lives.

Joy comes when we choose gratitude, when we fix our eyes on the blessings God has provided, and when we remember that Jesus’ birth brought salvation and peace to a weary world.

Sharing the Gift of Joy

Advent also reminds us that joy is meant to be shared. Just as the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to see Jesus and then spread the word about what they had witnessed, we, too, are called to reflect God’s joy to others. This might look like acts of kindness, a listening ear, or simply sharing the good news of Christ with someone who needs hope.

This week, ask yourself: How can I be a messenger of joy in my community?

Practical Ways to Embrace Joy

  • Gratitude Practice: Each day this week, write down three things you’re grateful for. Reflect on how God has been faithful in your life.
  • Celebrate with Worship: Sing or listen to songs that proclaim the joy of Christ’s birth. Let the lyrics remind you of the Savior who came to bring you life.
  • Serve Others: Find ways to spread joy through small acts of service—whether it’s baking cookies for a neighbor, volunteering, or offering words of encouragement.
  • Quiet Reflection: Spend time in prayer or meditation, asking God to fill your heart with His joy and to show you how to share it with others.

The True Source of Joy

As we journey through this third week of Advent, let us remember that true joy isn’t found in the gifts under the tree or the perfection of holiday plans. It’s found in the gift of Jesus Christ—Emmanuel, God with us. His love, grace, and presence are the source of our deepest joy.

Let the words of Nehemiah 8:10 encourage you this week: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” May you find strength and peace in His joy and carry it with you as we draw closer to the celebration of His birth.
