Welcome to our second week of Advent, a season of waiting and preparation. This week, we are talking about the theme of peace, exploring its biblical roots and its relevance in our lives today. As we journey through the scriptures, we aim to understand the peace that Jesus brought into the world and how we can embody and share this peace in our daily lives.
Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ. It is marked by four themes: hope, peace, joy, and love. Each week, we light a candle representing one of these themes, culminating in the lighting of the Christ candle on Christmas Eve. This tradition symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the world.
Isaiah 9:6-7 foretells the coming of a child who will be called the Prince of Peace. This prophecy highlights the eternal peace that Jesus would bring, a peace that surpasses all understanding and is rooted in justice and righteousness.
In Luke 2:13-14, the angels announce the birth of Jesus, proclaiming peace on earth to those on whom God's favor rests. This moment marks the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy and the arrival of peace through Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1-2 explains that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. This peace is a result of being justified by faith, granting us access to God's grace and the hope of His glory.
In John 14:25-27, Jesus promises to leave His peace with us, a peace unlike what the world offers. This peace is a gift from the Holy Spirit, meant to calm our troubled hearts and dispel our fears.
Romans 8:6 teaches that a mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. To experience this peace, we must align our thoughts with the Spirit, allowing God's truth to transform our minds.
Colossians 3:15-17 urges us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. This involves being thankful, teaching and admonishing one another with wisdom, and doing everything in the name of Jesus.
The Four Aspects of Peace
1. Peace Came Through Jesus: Jesus' birth brought peace into the world, making it available to all who believe.
2. Peace Through Salvation: Personal peace comes when we accept Jesus as our Savior and are justified by faith.
3. Peace in Trials: Even in the midst of life's storms, we can experience God's peace through the Holy Spirit.
4. Eternal Peace: One day, we will live in perfect peace with God in heaven.
While we live in a broken world, we can still experience God's peace. This peace is not the absence of problems but the presence of God in our lives. To live with peace, we must:
1. Submit Our Minds to the Spirit: Allow the Holy Spirit to govern our thoughts, leading to life and peace.
2. Let Peace Rule Our Hearts: Ensure that the peace of Christ is the ruling force in our hearts, influencing our actions and relationships.
Questions for Reflection
1. Do you know the Prince of Peace personally?
2. Have you been justified through faith?
3. Do you have peace with God?
4. What is governing your mind?
5. What is ruling your heart?
As we continue through this Advent season, let us seek to embody the peace that Jesus brought into the world. Reflect on the questions above and take steps to align your mind and heart with God's Spirit. This week, challenge yourself to be a peacemaker, sharing the peace of Christ with those around you. Remember, we live with peace now, but one day, we will live in perfect peace with God forever.
