Living Authentically
In today's world of endless distractions, people are desperately searching for something real and genuine. This deep desire for authenticity extends to our faith, relationships, and daily interactions.
What Does It Mean to Be Real with God?
The foundation of authentic Christian living starts with our relationship with God. Romans 12:9 tells us that "Love must be sincere." This means approaching God with complete honesty about our doubts and struggles, weaknesses and failures, and need for His guidance and help.
Just like Nathaniel in John 1:43-50, who openly expressed his doubts about Jesus coming from Nazareth, God wants us to be real with Him. He already knows our hearts - He's waiting for us to be honest about them.
How Can We Be Authentic with Ourselves?
Paul teaches in Romans 12:3 not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought. True authenticity requires honest self-assessment, acknowledging both strengths and weaknesses, accepting who we are without embellishment or diminishment, and understanding our identity as children of God.
What Does Being Real with Others Look Like?
Romans 12:10 challenges us to "Love one another with brotherly affection" and to "outdo one another in showing honor." Authentic relationships in the church community should foster an environment where genuineness is encouraged, allow people to be themselves without judgment, create space for sharing burdens and struggles, and build meaningful connections between believers.
Why Do People Leave the Church?
Often, people leave the church not because they've lost faith in God, but because they've encountered inauthentic Christianity. When churches or believers fail to show genuine love and acceptance, it can drive people away from their faith community.
This week, challenge yourself to live more authentically by:
1. Examining your prayer life - are you being completely honest with God?
2. Identifying areas where you might be wearing a "mask".
3. Reaching out to share genuinely with another believer.
4. Looking for opportunities to build authentic relationships in your church community.
Questions to reflect on:
1. Am I being truly honest in my relationship with God?
2. Where in my life am I putting up facades instead of being genuine?
3. How can I foster more authentic relationships in my church community?
4. Am I creating a safe space for others to be real with me?
Remember, authentic Christian living starts with being real with God, extends to honest self-assessment, and flows into genuine relationships with others. This is how we reflect Christ's light to a world desperately seeking something real.
